top five things i like about living in taiwan

1. movie theaters. you would think that a country full of people shorter than i am would tend to make things in smaller sizes. shoes aside, this is not so! movie theaters in taiwan are huge, with expansive plush seats and yards of leg room. so good-a lah!

2. taro. it's a purple root-like food that the taiwanese mash up like a potato and put in lots of things. it's very good sweetened and put inside pastries. taro croissant = yummy.

3. orchids. they're so cheap, and so pretty! for five dollars US you can get a big one that's already blooming and lasts, even under my neglecting care, months on end. amazing.

4. plastic lid-sealing machines. wish that coffee wouldn't spill in your car? want to take your beverage home upside-down in a bag on the back of a scooter? well, in taiwan you can! instead of giving you cups à la mcdonalds, with a lid just barely attached to the cup and a gaping hole atop it for the straw, beverage people here seal a plastic lid right on the cup for you! the plastic is like saran wrap, but slightly harder, and with a lot less tensil strength (?). when you want to drink, you poke a hole in the seal with your straw, and voila. it's hard to explain really, but it's cool.

5. showerheads on bathroom walls. what, you say? showerheads are always on bathroom walls. well, sort of. they are usually on showerbox, or bathtub walls. in taiwan, as far as i can tell, there is no distinction between the shower and the sink, the water coming out of the wall and the water swirling down the toilet. yes, you get the whole bathroom wet when you take a shower, but so what? i always did that anyway. without that pesky divider between the shower and the rest of the bathroom, you can clean everything at once! bathroom walls tinged with mildew? no problem. sink a little grimey? just aim the showerhead in that direction for a while. so ea-gee.
